旧地重游
很艰难地，总算捱过了考试，午时就直接去巡访一贯的据点：乌节路的Borders和Kino，Bugis的百胜楼及国家图书馆总馆。
Borders和Kino依旧是老样子，我热切期待的某本新旗弈书还未上架，不料柯南#60已经上市了，自然入手一本以免此行无功而返。在百胜楼，本来是想找有关大老二和麻将的书籍，没想到竟然是少之又少，另外也发现，上海书局和其他几家中文书局，已经不再收录一些旧版的围棋书籍，看来早些年前应该把某些系列给补全的，现在可耽误了，得靠网购来解决了(但有些书太旧也未必找得到)。最后反而是在Knowledge Book Centre大有意外斩获：发现了一些少儿读物系列的新本，IQ Math Professor系列以前我可是有全收藏的，没想到现在还陆续出版了几本新书！想当年单是一本的价格就足以抵上一天的饭钱，现在可说是微不足道了，真是此一时彼一时啊。另外还入手了一本gamebook和某中文麻将书籍(虽然旧但相当厚实，应该有点料吧)。顺带一提，KBC是本地独一无二的英文二手书商(虽然也有其他语言的书籍)，其藏书量令人咋舌，很多时候来这里寻宝总会有意想不到的发现，今天就是如此。最后的图书馆一行，总算找到了两本麻将的著作，以及一本游戏编程的入门。为了下学期，C++总是要学好的，有点调味料催化一下也不错。值得一提的是，公共图书馆的气氛就是不一样，不用老面对the horde of muggers@central lib，而是一些比较有纯粹娱乐意识的群众，感觉上确实比较健康。遗憾的是一本大老二的书都没有，倒是看到几本类似的书(斗地主，名词看不太懂)，还有，书局里Sudoku的书太多太多了，这游戏都能用电脑来随机设题了，没事出版那么多书，赶潮流也得有个限度。

I feel like working again
...after a very long period of passive state. Could be the recoil after being forced to the wall. I could write a whole treatise on this, but for the time being, let's just say that I had a long day (mentally anyway) and it's gonna be a long night ahead...it has been a day of interesting experiences and reflections and although I'm not going to find the solution to all my problems right now, I can at least be satisfied that:
1) I figured out how to do binary division, the method turns out to be more stupid than I thought, which is actually good.
2) I bought enough mosquito coils to last for the rest of March.
Doesn't make any sense? It's okay, it is intended to be so!

Unity Is Strength
Let's see...apart from Kelantan, UMNO lost (control of state government in) Penang, Kedah and Selangor for the first time in possibly decades
"In Selangor, DAP has taken 35 seats (DAP - 15, PKR - 11 and PAS - 9) out of the 56 seats in the state."
"Both the PAS and PKR have won 22 out of 36 state seats in Kedah."
"The opposition has won 27 out of 40 state seats in Penang - DAP (19 seats), PKR (6) and PAS (2)."
With a combined effort from the opposition, UMNO is denied of not just 1, but 4 state governments! A budding alliance no doubt, but so far they have honoured it...and are well-rewarded. A most interesting turn of events ahead to be anticipated.
PS: If Perak is also down, mother might be very pleased...but it doesn't really matter anymore.

irritating chinese chauvinism/nationalism
These days, every so often 中华民族的利益高于一切 is used as a blanket statement to put an end to all sorts of discussion topics in chinese forums, to silence all voices of dissent, be it international politics, or rising oil prices, or the long list of chinese internal issues. Some pple do not seem to understand that a blanket is often nothing more than a blank statement. Who is in the position to decide what is blablablah's 利益? Some would go on to say, power speaks, 靠实力说话, i.e. one who holds the actual power to decide on things, decide on what should be considered 'right' things. With this understanding in mind, it is regretable that the world is obliged to keep a watchful eye on all great powers, since it is considered a given that those with the power are obliged to impose theirs on those without it.

CPF Life? my ass
Okay, so all of us who are even somewhat educated, already know that this grand scheme from the GAHMEN, despite its numerous options, has ZERO PROTECTION against INFLATION, and thus is clearly INSUFFICIENT to cover our retirement NEEDS (which is assuming that we even live long enough to at least 65, to retire). For those of us who are poor and prefer to keep more liquid assets (aka cash) with us, this is really a burden. Heck, even an option that allows us to invest in terms of gold bars is better than that. Golds bars never depreciate, you see? But the GAHMEN is unlikely to listen, I think at this rate, I'm really going to stay single and be free from such headaches. I don't mind living a third rate kind of life by myself, but there's no reason why my family should be suffering the same fate. It's funny, in every part of the world there are poor people, but they survive anyway. In Singapore, it seems that surviving as poor people is getting more and more difficult.
Life is costly yes, but having powers that be making decisions for you, isn't really going to change any of that. Looking from the GAHMEN's point of view, the BIG picture, they are only taking care of their backside. They know that there will always be people who cannot make it in life, it is only a matter of numbers. They are satisfied as long as they feel that have done something to deal with whatever problems they can perceive/project/predict. Most of them do not take public transport, eat at hawker centres, live the life of the laymen, but they think they are well qualified to make any decision for the man on the street. As for individuals, they can go rot in hell. As always, the government takes care of the country, while the people take care of themselves.
Of course, there's always an alternative: becoming rich. Rich enough that GST hike and tax reductions actually benefit you. Rich enough that you will not be bothered about the puny amount of money you have in the CPF account. I must be more money-minded.

malaysian elections
Sometimes I treat political news like entertainment news (particularly stuff about taiwan); read and laugh and forget, but this time round, what's brewing over the other side of the causeway seems to be quite interesting, rather than just mildly entertaining. Riding atop the momentum of recent scandals, uniting against a common enemy, fielding every single worthy candidate they could find without infighting (issues abt wck and fpt seemed to have been resolved according to recent reports), and almost getting some defectors from the incumbent BN(?), the opposition seems to have gotten quite a few things right at least. I have no time to really follow this due to recent hectic work commitments, but I would most certainly expect an interesting fight.

brief update
Hereby, I shall mourn the demise (or rather, stillbirth) of my mid term break; I'm celebrating its end before it has even begun, and such is the irony of life.

2 programming assignments in 7 days? jangan main main
not to mention test scramble that follows right after.
double week = 6.5; // I should call this
but today I went crazy with sms rampage, sending a nothing-too-special msg to nearly 20 pple while I kenna stuck in traffic jam as usual aboard bas nombor sepuloh
about half of them actually were kind enuff to haf responded....thought of putting their responses here but maybe i shld protect the innocent? wahaha
this month still have 200+ free outgoing, maybe I will save it for the special day!
the leap years.....whoa
oso, fixed the access privileges for unix account, now the embedded music shld work again

Friendship Day....some thoughts
It is a nice feeling to have friends, and feeling more like a normal person, really.
I felt like making a mental list of all pple I've known through my classes, just to sorta commemorate them.....but realized it is too big even for a person like me who don't actually know *that* many people, and maybe a little pointless too.....most of them we have had too little contact in the long run which makes calling them friends now a little insincere on my part.
Maybe I should just talk about something general.
Taking those 'outside' classes, particular translation, have fringe benefits, in allowing me to harness aspects of myself that I've never knew , e.g. with regard to social engineering. Given the right context and situation, I can actually socialize pretty well. But the situation is very different back home when the work has little bearing on life, which makes blending work and life that much harder, and usually I'll tend to indulge in one to the abandonment of the other. Discipline, is what I need.
I'm just thankful for not getting a certain card this year :)

And even if we did have only Christians in our midst, if we expelled every non-Christian from the United States of America, whose Christianity would we teach in the schools? Would we go with James Dobson's, or Al Sharpton's? Which passages of Scripture should guide our public policy? Should we go with Leviticus, which suggests slavery is ok and that eating shellfish is abomination? How about Deuteronomy, which suggests stoning your child if he strays from the faith? Or should we just stick to the Sermon on the Mount - a passage that is so radical that it's doubtful that our own Defense Department would survive its application? So before we get carried away, let's read our bibles. Folks haven't been reading their bibles.
This brings me to my second point. Democracy demands that the religiously motivated translate their concerns into universal, rather than religion-specific, values. It requires that their proposals be subject to argument, and amenable to reason. I may be opposed to abortion for religious reasons, but if I seek to pass a law banning the practice, I cannot simply point to the teachings of my church or evoke God's will. I have to explain why abortion violates some principle that is accessible to people of all faiths, including those with no faith at all."

New evaluation method
Work listing has been done, but I need to identify the ones of higher priority and now I shall do so with a new method..... btw, the weekend was not very productive but at least I caught up on some sleep and finished the bloody cl3281 group assignment, and yeah I got a kamus with example sentences and 2 malay books for toddlers from mpbl
The week ahead:
Monday, nothing is due but certainly I should read up more on XML before the meeting later, and prepare something for malay 1hr tutorial . Tuesday is a hell of a day with more database, c++, translation and malay 2hr tutorial, so I should prepare something for each of these modules inclusive of cl3281 tutorial, after that it will be time for some chess at MPSH4.

Summary
Today met up with the translation group....quite funny pple, but in the end also took quite long. this is one hell of a time consuming module, estimate 9 + 5.5 hours already for 1 single assignment, although part of the 5.5 is bcoz we went OT too often...but still...fun leh
Got back too late, so didnt go out to get that Malay dictionary. Anywayz tonight need to settle 2102s and 2105 tutorials, and the 'findings' from today's meeting. Any leftover time must be devoted to cs3243 tutorial and XML content for cs2102s, I don't think 3 straight sleepless nights is possible although right now im most prob heading into my 2nd...
Mental check of some things that are now KIV: cs1280 lab due on 7th Feb morning, and the cs2105 webcast that i missed today

Summary of a day, and dateline scheduling
SQL commands, simple ones.
Had great lunch after that.
I met friends in java to c++ class.
During break, rain, forgot to bring windbreaker, was really cold.
Translation class is like usual, eye-candy, lame jokes and all
Sa-ma su-ka ber-mai-n catur.

这个标题适用于好几个不同类型的题材~~
1。历史恶搞 (女三国演义？三国题材确实很泛滥，不过如此BT的题材好像还未出现)
2。美少女偶像伦理 (LGZ三人转世来到现代并成为女性，与周遭的男性发生种种复杂并耐人寻味的关系)
3。成人类 (同上，不过内容方面能喝汤的尽量多喝，老子最讨厌在关键部分打马赛克的伪se文了)
4。社会反讽 (小市民生活另类写照，e.g. LGZ三人为交通所累，延误了前往SDU相亲的过程，此处增若干千字)
个人比较倾向[1]，无奈历史的部分难以驾驭，仅有恶搞不免流于低俗。[2]、[3]的文笔要求比较低，但老子近期内不爽写=。=。[4]在特定的情况下绝对可以有如行云流水般。。不过题材本身比较有局限性

Breakthrough
Okay, this is part of my work for the cs3243 assignment, although I have setup-ed and compiled the given stub files, tbh I have yet to really study the question and think about what to do (aka doing the work), but so far I've spent some time playing the zog implementation and discovered some interesting things. The pieces behave like the pawns from chess....but it isn't really chess due to the different movement rules. As an avid chess player myself, I had no understanding of the defensive methods needed for this whole new 'board' game and lost most of the initial games without knowing what was really happening.
Now, pawn play in chess is a very involved subject that can span several books, books on chess I mean. There are two ways to look at pawns: as individual entities, or their collective structure. Mobility and structural integrity, dynamic and static considerations. There is also an element of central control in chess which is also relevant to breakthrough, but in a different way. Just like defence, the idea of central control is a little different in breakthrough; making 'central' moves do not necessarily result in actual control if structural integrity is not maintained.
Defence/Blocking:
Due to the rules of the game, the first player that sends a unit across the board, would be the winner. If there is such a thing as absolute blocking, the victory condition would be impossible to achieve, so defence is mostly just about blocking and delaying the opponent (since no blockade can be held indefinitely due to zugzwang, yet another important theme in chess). It takes at least two units to block a single unit, and there are several configurations.
Offence/Breakthrough/Combinations:

Top-level Semi-Slav brilliancy with novelty on move 12!!
Yeah...no love lost as the two ex-world champions refused to shake hands at both the start and conclusion of the game, but that did not prevent them from producing an amazing game. Corus 2008 had clearly been a Semi-Slav festival, but to throw a knight on as early as move 12 (and a novelty no less!) is simply jaw-dropping, even for a Toppy home preparation.

In interview for sportni.bg the manager of Veselin Topalov announced that today there won't be a handshake. After the scandal in Elista they've played just one game, finished draw. But it seems that both sides haven't forgot their mutual past. I hope there will be a good game. Enjoy!
1.d4 We were secretly hoping to see Topalov taking another aim at the Petroff defence. He was successful against Boris Gelfand in one of the earlier rounds.
1... d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 e6 5.Bg5 h6 6.Bh4 Topalov allows the open Moscow variation. Kramnik plays that with white and black, while it is not unknown for the Bulgarians since Cheparinov won a game in this line against Nepomnichtschi
6... dc4 7.e4 g5 8.Bg3 b5 9.Be2 Bb7 10.O-O Nbd7 11.Ne5 Bg7 12.Nf7 A novelty!
12... Kf7 13.e5 Very fast sacrifice! We blinked and Topalov had already sacrificed a figure!..... All this added to the fact that THERE WAS NO HANDSHAKE promises an exciting game! Yet, a very bad example from two ex world champions.

21... b4 Almost obligatory, as black has to keep the a-file closed. Now the c4 pawn is loosened up, but c4-c3 might be an important deflecting factor is Black's further attempts to defend the king.
22.Rac1 Going after the c4 pawn outright. Kramnik would love to play Qf5 with idea Rh7, but e4 and f5 are unavailable because of Nd6 fork.

This game was suspended on move 1. The reason was Short's protest that his opponent did not comply a recommendation of the Presidential Board of FIDE, still awaiting approval from the FIDE Congress. The Appeals Committee ruled out that after written apology by Cheparinov is submitted, the game should be played today. This encounter already accumulated significant emotional charge, so we may expect an uncompromising fight.

17.b3 After (17.Qa3 Bg7 18.Qxd6 Bf8) the Queen is trapped.

This game was suspended on move 1. The reason was Short's protest that his opponent did not comply a recommendation of the Presidential Board of FIDE, still awaiting approval from the FIDE Congress. The Appeals Committee ruled out that after written apology by Cheparinov is submitted, the game should be played today. This encounter already accumulated significant emotional charge, so we may expect an uncompromising fight.

Sounds like good news, but won't really benefit from it anytime soon. Furthermore, if cost is the main cause that resulted in the current frequencies, I fail to see how this can be magically improved with the intervention of the gahmen, unless commuters have been taken for a ride (hah hah) all along!

其中最令人瞩目的是要彻底改变巴士路线的规划与经营方式。
巴士路线向来是由业者自行规划，并根据商业考量向公共交通理事会提出申请经营某些路线，而理事会在接获乘客反馈后，也会向业者建议开辟新路线。
西北部地区包括武吉巴督、武吉班让、蔡厝港、三巴旺、兀兰和义顺的巴士服务主要是交由SMRT负责经营，其他地区则全归新捷运负责，两大网络基本上是“各自为政”。
林双吉指出，要加强巴士和地铁服务之间的结合，就需把整个公共交通系统视为一体来规划和运作，而不是分开管理。
他说，目前由于两个业者是按照所负责的地区来自行规划路线，因而造成全岛250多条路线中，仅有35%是每隔10分钟内川行一趟，有的间隔时间甚至超过半小时。
林双吉说：“巴士是公共交通系统不可或缺的部分，每天的乘客量相等于总运输量的三分之二，如果巴士服务明显逊色于地铁，整个公交系统将受牵连，乘客也会受罪。”
因此，政府决定在明年底之前，让陆交局担任中央规划巴士网络的任务，而公共交通理事会则会继续负责监督巴士网络和服务素质。
他说：“巴士路线统一交由陆交局规划将让乘客受惠，因为我们是把整个系统视为一体来规划，乘客有望享有更衔接无间和更方便的车程。例如，以后支线服务会更快捷，方便乘客直透转换站或地铁站。”
接下来一年里，陆交局将同所有相关人士包括交通业者共同商讨，决定如何落实中央巴士路线规划及竞争性投标的新模式。
将大刀阔斧提升
巴士车速和服务
此外，当局也将大刀阔斧提升巴士车速和服务，及提供更多实时信息，方便乘客更好规划行程。
这包括改以车程距离来计算所需支付的车资、增设更多普通和全天巴士道、强制规定驾车者让路给开离巴士站弯道的巴士等。
从明年8月起，业者在平日繁忙时段须确保至少80%的车队出车的间隔时间（headway）不超过10分钟，而不是目前每隔15分钟开出一趟。
陆交局也将确保支线巴士服务更为频密和直透，转换站的巴士和地铁服务班次也会更好地协调，以缩短乘客候车时间，方便人们转车。
林双吉说：“到了2015年，我们的目标是希望80%的公共交通乘客能在一个小时内完成车程，比现有71%的比例高。”
本地公路网络目前已占用了12％的土地总面积，而相信接下来人们对陆路交通系统的需求将飙升60%，每天进行的车程预料将从现有的890万趟次，激增到2020年的1430万趟次。
这项影响深远的陆路交通检讨工作的大目标，是要到2020年把上午繁忙时段的公共交通趟次从63%增加到至少70%，如果以总车程趟次来计算，增幅相当可观。
当局也将在接下来两个星期内，先后宣布有关扩大地铁网络和汽车需求管理的新措施。
